Start with the event
Ask who would evaluate, supervise, negotiate, and try the matter; which licenses and jurisdictions are relevant; and how similar work is handled.
Build the record
Ask how updates are delivered, who answers routine questions, what client participation is expected, and how decisions are documented.
Prepare the legal questions
Ask for the complete fee and expense terms, likely early work, major uncertainties, conflicts, and how either side can end the relationship.
Contact and insurance log
Keep a dated log of reports, claim numbers, requests, responses, appointments, expenses, and decisions. Distinguish what you observed from what another person said or a record states.
Use the file in a consultation
Bring the shortest accurate chronology you can prepare, the most important original records or secure copies, and three questions. A lawyer can identify gaps without requiring you to solve the legal issues first.
