Ask who would be responsible for the matter
A firm profile is not an individual license record. Ask for the name of the lawyer expected to supervise or handle the work and every jurisdiction relevant to the matter.
Open the official state directory
Use the state bar, supreme court, attorney-registration agency, or disciplinary authority linked by the state. Search the individual’s full name and compare location or other identifiers.
Read status labels in their official context
Active, inactive, administrative, retired, suspended, and other labels can have specific meanings. Use the authority’s definitions and contact it if the record is unclear.
Distinguish public discipline from reviews
A licensing record and a consumer review measure different things. Neither alone establishes experience, fit, communication quality, or the likely result of a matter.
Keep a dated comparison record
Record the lawyer, jurisdiction, official URL, date checked, consultation questions, fees, staffing, and follow-up terms. Recheck before hiring if time has passed.
