Map the places connected to the event
List where the injury happened, where each person or entity is located, where conduct occurred, where a vehicle is registered, where insurance was issued, and where treatment occurred. Each fact may matter for a different reason.
Separate governing law from court location
The state where a lawsuit can be filed and the law a court applies are related but distinct questions. A firm’s office address also does not decide either issue.
Preserve every policy and agreement
Insurance policies, rental agreements, employment records, waivers, and contracts may contain relevant provisions. Keep complete copies rather than excerpts or screenshots.
Do not compare only the headline deadline
Choice-of-law and borrowing-statute rules can complicate the limitations analysis. A longer period in one state does not mean it controls.
Find counsel equipped for the jurisdictions involved
Ask whether the lawyer is licensed where needed, has handled cross-border issues, and will associate other counsel. Verify licenses with each relevant state authority.
